Franciscan Apple Cookie Jar in the Apple earthenware pattern made in Portugal by Franciscan of England. It measures 8 1/4" high to the top of the stem-shaped lid finial.

From the highly collectable Franciscan Apple pattern, this distinctive cookie jar presents the classic country appeal that's made the line popular since introduced in California in 1940. In the shape of a large ripe shiny red apple, with a sprig of leaves at the base, each hand painted piece displays an individual look. The stem of the apple serves as the lid's handle for a charming design touch typical of the collection. It's a beautiful gift for the fan of the Franciscan Apple dinnerware and accessories, or as a delightful standalone treasure. The durable porcelain should be washed by hand due to the size.

Franciscan dinnerware dates back to 1934 when it was manufactured at a plant in Glendale, Southern California. At first it was called "Franciscan pottery" which by the late 1930s had become "Franciscan ware." The parent company of the Franciscan division was Gladding, McBean and Co., which engaged a husband and wife team, Mary and Frederic Grant (a ceramics engineer), to handle every aspect of the production of its dinnerware. From 1936 through 1952, Mary Grant was Chief Stylist, in which capacity she designed and oversaw the Franciscan Desert Rose dinnerware line.
Collectibles

Franciscan Desert Rose dinnerware is no longer in production in the United States. The plant in California was closed in 1984, after the Franciscan division was bought over by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Ltd., in 1979, and production was moved to the United Kingdom. Franciscan Desert Rose dinnerware items with the "Made in USA" & "Made in England" back-stamp have become sought-after collectibles.

The Franciscan product line is now made in China. The workmanship is terrible. We do NOT sell any Franciscan which has been made in China.
